Amazon famously calculated that every 100 milliseconds of added page load cost them 1% of sales. Google’s mobile research finds a 500ms delay drops session traffic 20%. This is old news in e-commerce. It’s newer news in dealer marketing.
Here’s what a typical franchise-vendor VDP looks like in 2026, measured with Google’s own tools:
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): 4.2 to 5.8 seconds
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint): 280 to 420 milliseconds
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): 0.28 to 0.45
For reference, Google’s “good” thresholds are LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1. Most dealer VDPs fail all three.
What that costs a dealership
Model the impact. A dealership drives 3,000 monthly VDP views. At the Amazon rate, every second of load-time bloat is losing roughly 10% of those shoppers before they even see the vehicle. On a 4.5s VDP, that’s ~1,000 shoppers per month bouncing at the page level — before the lead form is even a factor.
The fixes are boring
Modern image formats (WebP or AVIF). Lazy loading below the fold. No third-party JavaScript in the critical path (which means no chat widget on load, no tag manager loading everything at once, no marketing pixels blocking render). Server-side rendering, not client-side hydration.
Every dealer platform can ship these. Most don’t, because their architecture wasn’t built for them and their customers stopped asking. The dealers who do get them get 10–25% more converting shoppers on the same ad spend. That’s a real number.
